We hope that life is being good to you on all fronts. Here are a few words that describe what we we were up to in 2010 with some hints (& hopes) for the future. Please check out the photo blog for some images.
2010 was a fine, interesting, and sometimes adventurous year for us. At the top of the list of our memories is the pleasure we take in our daughter Rachel’s family: husband David, sons Jack & Will. We treasure any time with them and especially enjoy our days together at Lake Superior during the summer.
We love living here in Beloit, Wisconsin, a place that has many of the challenges and opportunities that confront countless American communities these days. The improved Riverfront, the new library, the Roy Chapman Andrews Society, Masterworks Chorus, the East End Club, the Beloit College Buffaloes, the First Presbyterian Choir, the Beloit Junior Golf Association, the Garden Club and other opportunities make us happy here and hopeful regarding the future.
As the years go by, Lake Superior becomes more of a priority from May through October. This year we did some physical improvements on the cabin that [partially] addressed Mim’s aesthetic hopes and practical necessities. Tom’s new book Discovering Lake Superior and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan has been selling well up there and has introduced us to new friends along the lake.
We are especially drawn to communities that have seen better days, but that are creatively adapting. Beloit; Ontonagon and Calumet, Michigan; Chattanooga. Each Thanksgiving we travel to Tennessee to visit Tom’s cousin Ann (Ahlgren) Pinion and her family who live on Signal Mountain near Chattanooga. Once again this year we stopped off at the Mammoth cave area in Kentucky on the way.
We still regularly attend operas, other musical events, plays and athletic contests, especially if our grandsons are participating. In the spring of 2010 we traveled to the southeast and then to the Canadian Rockies to see former Beloiters ensconced in their retirement paradises.
Let’s stay in touch!
